This is a combination trial piece, struck in brass, of the 1922 Grant Memorial design with star.

It is listed in Judd and Pollock as having been struck from an obverse die and a reverse hub. It is also possible that this is some kind of brockage mint error.

If it is the latter, then a brass planchet somehow got placed between the obverse die and a Grant gold dollar with the reverse of the coin "serving" as the other die. This may explain why the planchet is splayed as a result of the striking.

It is unique and is ex Nagy, 58 ANA, Empire Topics #9, Lohr, Heritage 6/95, Bowers and Merena 7/02, Heritage 1/07.
