The following is a letter Aug 11, 1857 by James Longacre in the Library Company of Philadelphia (box 3, folder 4) “The New Cent” “If the Flying Eagle is abandoned, for the obverse, what shall be substituted? Another Eagle? that will probably only suffice to change, the class of objections, who are dissatisfied with the attitude – and action indicated. If any change is made I think it should be an entire change: because it is after all the design alone that is intrinsically vulnerable – and so far as that is concerned an Eagle in a different position, would still be a mark for the clamour of the captious – An aboriginal head with the legend or emblems of Liberty, would be least objectionable on the score of appropriateness; and it would be more likely to please than the bird.”
