Although described as a regular dies trial piece in the literature, it is more likely that this was deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets.
Examples were struck as follows:
Copper J787. This is unlisted in Pollock. If any do exist, they are probably masquerading as a regular issue proof.
Aluminum J788/P875 with 2 confirmed as follows:
1) B/R RCR #21-26 (1974-6) in set, unknown intermediates, Simpson-Heritage 8/21, LegendAuctions 2/23 - PCGS66, illustrated above
2) Lauder-Doyle Galleries 12/83, Heritage 9/21 - PCGS65, illustrated below courtesy of PCGS

One of these is ex Brenner-1914 ANS, Brand and the other is ex Woodin, Newcomer.
Nickel J789/P876 is unconfirmed. It might be a mint error struck on a nickel 3 cent planchet.
