This unique brass muling, combining an obverse used on 1869 five cent nickel patterns with the regular no motto five dollar gold reverse used prior to 1866, is believed to have been struck outside the mint from dies sold as scrap metal which were purchased by Joseph Mickley. Many of these coins ended up in the Crosby collection. It is not known if Mickley or Crosby was the actual minter of these coins.
Only a single example ex Crosby, Garrett-JHU, B/R 3/80 Garrett II sale is known. It was offered by Central Lake Coins on EBAY in February 2016 and was graded NGC64.
