Fake? 1868 International Half Eagle in Gold

An example of the 1868 international “5 Dollars, 25 Francs” pattern struck in gold with a plain edge has been discovered.

The coin was originally certified as Proof-63 CAM by PCGS and was to be offered in Bowers and Merena September 2002 sale as lot 589. In the opinion of several prominent numismatists who saw the piece at the 2002 ANA sale, it was not believed to be genuine. It was finally withdrawn from the auction sale on September 20.

We await further information on the true status of this piece.
