Although described as regular dies trial pieces, this was more likely deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete copper sets. This was the first year in which the Mint created these off-metal sets.
For this year 4 sets survived into modern times. T. Harrison Garrett had one, a virtually complete double set was apparently stolen from the Iowa State Historical Museum and a 4th set missing a half dollar was offered in Europe in October 2022.
