This is confirmed by letters Roger Burdette found in the National Archives - NARA-P E-111A. "Order received July 16, 1867 verbally from the Director. 200 Aluminum, of the Specimen Five Cent piece. (100 delivered July 18, 1867 to Mr. Thacher.)" Aluminum with reeded edge J562/P623 with about a dozen are known. Copper with plain edge J563/P624 with less than half a dozen known.
