Although described as regular dies trial pieces in the literature, it is more likely that these were deliberately struck for sale to collectors.
Examples are known as follows:
Copper J554/Pollock unlisted Examples were included in the double set that was apparently stolen from the Iowa State Historical Museum. As the whole set is missing, it cannot be checked to see if they were really copper or regular bronze strikings. According to Scott Schechter of NGC, the cent in the recently discovered set in Europe was tested and found to be 99.7% copper. Others are noted as being ex Brenner-1914 ANS, Brand and ex Newcomer.
Copper-nickel J555/P616 with only the Brenner-1914 ANS, Brand and Newcomer coins noted.
Nickel J556/P617 which if unique is ex Brenner-1914 ANS, V. Brand, A. Brand (sold 9/1/37), Farouk, Kreisberg 2/60, B/R 1975 RCR #24, Heritage 8/90 ANA - PCGS Unc65. This was struck from business strike dies including a badly cracked reverse die.
Oroide J557/P618 with only the illustrated Brenner-1914 ANS, V. Brand, H. Brand, Morgenthau 2/36 (part of lot 356), Porter-Mehl 6/42, Olsen-Mehl 11/44, Farouk, Kreisberg 4/59, Kreisberg 2/60, Kreisberg 6/63, Hughes 9/79, J.E. Drew, Simpson-Heritage 11/20 - PCGS62, cleaned, lacquered believed to exist. Click on the thumbnail image to enlarge. This was also struck from business strike dies as the reverse is badly cracked.
