This regular dies trial piece is possibly deliberately struck for sale to collectors. There is also a strong possibility that these are mint errors on 3 cent nickel planchets as one of these weighs 30.3 grains.

Judd lists these has being struck in both nickel J534 and silver-nickel J535 but we believe that only the former exists as nickel and silver do not alloy well.

We can account for only 3 or 4 examples combined as follows: To see images, click here.

1) Paramount Auction 86, Heritage 8/97 ANA as PCGS64, ANR 1/06 as PCGS64, Heritage 3/06 as PCGS64, Simpson-Heritage 2/21 - PCGS65 with a spot on the shield another by the left edge of the O in ONE and some planchet issues near the head and across the lower reverse from 4:00 to 8:00

2) Superior 1/85, Superior 2/87, Queller-Heritage 1/09 FUN as NGC64, B/M 11/09 as NGC64, Kagins 3/17 as PCGS64, Kagins 3/18 - PCGS65, 30.3 grains according to Pollock.

3) B/R 2/76, Paramount 10/86, B/M 5/92 (as J534 in all 3 sales), Goldberg 10/00 as NGC66, Simpson-Heritage 8/21 ANA, Heritage 12/21 - PCGS66 as J535 with a small spot between Liberty's knees.

We would like the above example, which was encapsulated as a silver-nickel example of J535 analyzed to see if it actually contains any silver.

The cleaned Farouk, Hydeman-Kosoff 3/61 example may be a 4th. Virgil Brand owned 2, journal #39011 ex 1907 Stickney sale and journal #49094 from H. Chapman inventory in 1909.
