This muling of the regular shield nickel obverse and the regular $3 gold obverse is unique.
It was originally part of lot 563 in a June 1903 Low sale, then was offered as lot 116 in the Chapman brother's June 1905 sale of the McCabe collection, where, according to the McCabe sale bidbook in the John Ford library, it was consigned by William Hesslein, a rather shady dealer in the early 1900s. It was purchased by "Hy" at the sale, but regrettably, his identity is not known. In modern times, the coin appeared in the May 1974 #20 thru Spring 1975 editions of the Bowers and Ruddy Rare Coin Review, Heritage 3/07, Stacks 7/08, Heritage 8/10 ANA and Simpson-Heritage 1/21 - PCGS62.
Photo courtesy of Heritage and is the actual piece.
