This is the second shield nickel design with small motto and split date combined with the Tall 5 reverse. Examples were struck as follows: Nickel J492/P579 which if unique is ex Gschwend lot 242, Stacks 12/47 lot 196, Katen 8/48 ANA lot 2323, Stacks 10/49 lot 247, Farouk lot 1800, R.K. Harris (Kreisberg-Schulman 2/58) lot 2481. The listing by Taxay of the thin planchet example ex-Gschwend lot 244 was actually the Clapp-Eliasberg example of J489/P577. Copper J493/P580 with only 1 or 2 known. Auction listings including Gschwend lot 243, Mehl 12/22 lot 368, Mehl 5/24 lot 50?, Mehl 6/30 lot 879?, Reed 5/37 and Hydeman-Kosoff 3/61 lot 861. The Newcomer inventory had one and a coin with a similar description "large crude 5" was consigned by Armin Brand to BG Johnson in 1936. Regrettably, some of these older listings may be for J489-491/P577-8 or J501-3/P587-8. Incomplete white metal obverse splashers, P3278 and P3279 are in the collection of the Library Company of Philadelphia. The obverse die contains a die cutting error. The motto was started too far to the right in a location similar to the regular 1866 shield nickel obverse die and then corrected.
