Although described as regular dies trial pieces in the literature, it is more likely that these were deliberately struck for sale to collectors.
Examples are known as follows: For all available images, click here.
Copper-nickel J458/P532 with only the Simpson-Heritage 8/21 - PCGS66 known. This coin appears to have been struck as a proof and from an obverse die with the ball of the shield centered between the 8 and 6 in the date.
One is listed as ex Brenner-1914 ANS, Brand. Older listings for this pattern include Kagins 12/65 lot 2033 and 7/69 lot 12.
Nickel J459/P533 these are business strikes with the ball of the shield closer to the first 6 than to the 8 in the date. 3 examples known as follows:
1) Dibello-Stacks 5/70, Stacks 1/87, J.E. Drew (as J458 !!) - PCGS Unc65 with an obvious spot under the top of the 2 on the reverse.
2) Superior 1/90 - PCGS Unc65
3) Hughes 9/79, J.E. Drew, illustrated above, click on the thumbnail image to enlarge
One of these last 2 is ex Simpson-Heritage 1/21 FUN - PCGS Unc66
One of these is ex Brenner-1914 ANS, Brand and another is ex Newcomer. Other listings for these include Bolender 11/35 lot 178, Kagins 1/59 lot 291, Neumoyer-Stacks 5/60 lot 2278 all as Unc.
Note: It appears likely that older listings had trouble separating these last 2.
