The regular dies trial piece without motto.
Examples were struck as follows:
Copper J447/P519 with no confirmed examples. These may be a misdescription or underdescription of J446/P518 which have the motto "In God We Trust" on the reverse. Examples of such poorly cataloged listings include lot 811 in E. Cogan's 9/1869 sale and also lot 1371 of E. Cogan's 10/1875 Colonel Mendes I. Cohen sale.
Aluminum J448/P520 with only a single example ex Woodside lot 159, Newcomer, Farouk believed to exist. This is a very intriguing piece as aluminum was used only on some 3 cent patterns in 1865 making this very likely some sort of restrike, if it is in fact genuine.
Photo is a colorized regular issue proof and is shown to approximate what the die trial would look like. Photo used is courtesy of Heritage.
