The so-called transitional half eagle with 'In God We Trust' on the reverse. This reverse was adopted in 1866.
This forms part of a set along with the eagle J449/P521 and double eagle J452/P524. To view the entire set, click here.

Gold J445/P517. According to the June 1870 Mason & Co sale only 2 sets were struck and that is all that are known today. The set in that sale did not sell at the time. The 2 known are:
1) Snowden, Woodin, Newcomer, Col Green, Boyd, Farouk and has not been seen since. The Woodin set apparently came from Snowden for returning the 2 1877 half unions. For more on that, click here.
2) Mason & Company 6/1870 not sold, unknown intermediates, Mint collection on November 30, 1892 in set for $75, Smithsonian
Copper J446/P518 with about 20 known several of which have been gilt. The first definite appearance of this design was in the April 1870 auction by John Haseltine of coins from the Idler collection. A possible earlier listing may be Cogan's September 1869 sale.
