This fantasy muling of the 1858 flying eagle design with small letters and the regular 1864 indian head design without "L" was probably deliberately struck for sale to collectors.

Its first auction occurrence was as lot 570 of an October 1868 Mason & Company sale. Only 2 or 3 examples are known today including the following:

1) Dibello-Stacks 5/70, Stacks 12/80, Auction 83, Queller-Heritage 1/09 - NGC65, illustrated above, click on the thumbnail image to enlarge.

2) Lahrman-Kosoff 2/63, Paramount 11/73 Rare Coin List #6, Paramount 3/74 Rare Coin List #7, Paramount 11/74, Heritage 3/07, Stacks 7/08, Simpson-Heritage 1/21 - PCGS62, illustrated below

One of these is ex Brenner-1914 ANS exhibit, Brand (journal #92500:459).
