The "God Our Trust" pattern, a precursor to the familiar "In God We Trust" reverse motto used regularly starting in 1866. This design has the motto on a scroll. A second variety has the motto directly in the field above the eagle's head J340-J341/P412-P413. These were also struck in copper J339/P411. Only 7 sets in silver are supposed to be original. Some of these are believed to be restrikes. W. Elliot Woodward mentions in his October 1880 Haines sale catalog of the peddling of these sets by Mint officials. George Eckfeldt's journal notes the following: "Nov 16th 1863 Struck 30 sets of silver "God is our Trust" half dollars and 20 sets of copper for Gov Pollock. Date 1863." This leads us to believe that the November striking may represent a second striking in 1863 as opposed to a later restriking. This variety was also struck in 1861 and 1862.
