The "God Our Trust" pattern, a precursor to the familiar "In God We Trust" reverse motto used regularly starting in 1866.

This design has the motto on a scroll. A second example has the motto in a plane field above the eagle's head and is known as J279-J280/P330-P331.

Examples were struck from two different obverse dies as shown in the image below:



Date right with shield point near the right side of the '1' in date. This is the more common variety.

Copper J278/P329. Pollock omitted this coin in his book but did leave the number available for it. The following 3 are confirmed:

1) Simpson-Heritage 11/20 - PCGS64RB

2) Heritage 3/12 – NGC64RB

3) Private collection - PCGS67BN

Fewer than a dozen of each variety combined are confirmed. Some are bronzed, and some may be restrikes. More research is needed. Full red copper examples are extremely rare.

1862 and 1863.
