The Paquet reverse double eagle of combined with the regular obverse of 1860, struck in gold. This pattern was struck from a reverse die using the hub of the 1861-S reverse.
It differs slightly from the other hub in the position of the eagles wings relative to the "E"s in "United" and "America". On the 1861-P hub, the wings point to the "E"s whereas on the 1861-S hub, the wings point between the "T and E" and the "E and R".
To compare the reverse dies visually, we recommend looking at page 395 of Bowers and Merena's Norweb 3 sale where both the 1861 and 1861-S Paquet coins were offered or by comparing it to the J273/P322 by clicking on the link below.
For additional information on this, please refer to the article on the 1861 Paquet dollars in the ANA Centennial Anthology.
In gold, it is unique with the only example in the Smithsonian. It was added to the Mint cabinet on 10/11/1860 according to the Mint Cabinet Proof Acquisition book.
A copper pattern was also struck J273/P322 which used a die from the reverse hub of the 1861-P Paquet double eagle. For images of all of these, click here.
