These are struck on eagle diameter planchets as part of an anti-counterfeiting effort. This design also has a die blunder in that the "V" in "Five" is actually an upside down "A".
In copper, as illustrated, there are about 2 dozen known on both thick and thin planchets. Many have been gilt. Red examples are excessively rare. There are 3 examples in the Smithsonian, 2 in the Connecticut State Library ex Mitchelson and 2 in the Durham Museum ex Reed.
2 are known in gold of J271/P319. Both were in the Wilkison collection.
This design was repeated in 1861 as J283/P336.
Incomplete reverse die JA1860-4/P3248 and hub JA1860-5/P3251 trials, struck in lead, are also confirmed to exist.
