The Paquet reverse double eagle combined with an 1859 obverse. This pattern was struck from a reverse die using the hub of the 1861-S reverse. It differs slightly from the other hub in the position of the eagles wings relative to the "E"s in "United" and "America". On the 1861-P hub, the wings point to the "E"s whereas on the 1861-S hub, the wings point between the "T and E" and the "E and R". To compare the reverse dies visually, we recommend looking at page 395 of Bowers and Merena's Norweb 3 sale where both the 1861 and 1861-S Paquet coins were offered. Only 1 or 2 are believed to exist. The Woodside, Woodin-1914 ANS, Newcomer, Farouk, Judd, Bass-B/M 5/99, ANR 1/05 example is gilted and is illustrated above. A possible second example sold for $8.50 as lot 377 in J.C. Morgenthau & Company's 9/35 sale or it could be another appearance of the gilt coin with the gilding not noted.
