Although described as a regular dies trial piece, in aluminum, in the literature, it is believed that these were actually deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets.
Only 2 sets of this year are believed to have been struck. The pedigrees of the 2 known dollars are as follows:
1) Gschwend, V. Brand (journal #44169), A. Brand, Kelly 2/13/41 B.G. Johnson invoice, Kelly 9/41, unknown intermediates, 88 ANA, Superior 10/89, Auction 90, Stacks 10/95, ANR 3/05, Stacks-Bowers 2011 ANA, LegendAuctions 10/15 - NGC64, illustrated above and is identifiable by tarnish near the first star and at the TY in Liberty.
2) Newcomer, unknown intermediaries, Heritage 9/03, southern collection, Simpson-Heritage 8/22 - PCGS65, illustrated below

Earlier pedigrees for these include: Curtis, Kagin 12/51; Farouk; Hydeman and the 1968 CSNA auction. At this point, it is not possible to determine which sales belong together.
