The popular Barber design with motto "In God We Trust" above Liberty's portrait. Many people believe that this design is better than the accepted production one. We do not know why it was rejected.
Examples were struck as follows:
Nickel J1687/P1889 with about 2 dozen known including examples in the ANA Museum, Connecticut State Library, Durham Museum and Smithsonian.
Copper J1688/P1890 which has not been confirmed by modern scholars. The only listing seen for it was in the Elder sale catalog of 10/17/08, formerly in the possession of Saul Teichman, where lot 227 is annotated in handwriting as copper.
