One of the precursors to the 1883 Liberty nickel, this pattern is similar to J1680-J1683/P1882-P1885 except that this pattern has finer dentilation on both sides and is slightly thinner in diameter 21mm vs 22mm.
Examples from this die were struck as follows:
Nickel J1684/P1886 with a dozen or more are known including examples in the ANA Museum, ANS, 2 in the Smithsonian.

Pollock notes 3 were in a NY collection that were purchased from Kosoff & Kaplan in 1958-9. It is not known if that includes any or all of the 3 listed above or were actually J1682.
