One of the precursors to the 1883 Liberty nickel, this one has E Pluribus Unum above the wreath on the reverse. Examples were struck as follows:

Nickel J1680/P1882 with about 2 dozen known including examples in the ANA Museum, ANS, Durham Museum and Smithsonian.

Nickel with 5 raised ridges on edge J1683/P1883. This is one of the famous 'Blind Man's' nickels. Only 3 were struck according to the addenda in Haseltine's March 1883 sale but this is not correct as more than that many are known including the following: To see available images, click here.

1) Elder 10/17/1908 or 2/25/1909 or 4/9/1909 sale, Mitchelson-CSL, see note below.

2) B/R 6/75, B/R 10/77, Stacks 1/87, Wilcox - NGC64

3) Stacks 1/87, B/M 1/94, Heritage 96 ANA, Heritage 2004 ANA, Southern collection, Simpson collection - PCGS64

4) Novoselsky, B/M 10/00 - PCGS65

5) Neumoyer-Stacks 5/60, B/M 1/03 as PCGS64, Simpson-Heritage 1/21 - NGC67/PCGS67

Note: Elder sold 4 of these in his 10/17/1908 lot 228, 2/16/1909 lot 790, 2/25/1909 lot 325 and 4/9/1909 lot 311 sales. 2 of these went to Virgil Brand, the first via Elder's 2/16/09 sale lot 790 (journal #47978) and the second from Judson Brenner in 1919 (journal # 92500:1669a). The other 2 apparently account for the Mitchelson-CSL piece and the Norweb-NN 9/53 sale examples.
