This is an experimental piece struck in argentan - a German silver alloy - using regular business strike 1854 half dime dies.

On this variety, the date is high. These were struck on very thick planchets with rounded plain edge and have the appearance of a broadstruck mint error. We are aware of only the following 2 or 3 specimens.

1) Superior 1/85, RARCOA-Akers 6/91, Simpson-Heritage 8/21 - PCGSAU55

2) Heritage 8/90 ANA - proof 62

The example in Heritage 3/28/91 Bullet sale was graded AU55 and is probably the same as coin #1.
