Longacre's flying eagle design. This was apparently copied from Christian Gobrecht's dollar and half dollar patterns in the late 1830s. This is one of the first attempts to create a smaller copper cent.
This obverse was combined with 2 or 3 different reverse designs.
On this one, there are three leaves beneath the "E" in "States" and was only used on this pattern. As the central portion of the illustrated piece appears weak, it was likely rejected.
