Longacre's flying eagle design. This was apparently copied from Christian Gobrecht's dollar and half dollar patterns in the late 1830s. This is one of the first attempts to create a smaller copper cent. This obverse was combined with 2 or 3 different reverse designs. On this one, there are two leaves beneath the "E" in "States". This reverse was also used on J160-J162/P187-P188 and J172-J174A/P198-P201. To see all 3 reverses side by side, click here. These were struck in copper J163 and Bronze J164.
