William Barber's sailors head design similar to that used on 20 cent, half eagle and eagle patterns of 1875 and on dollar patterns of 1876. This design was also used in 1877 on dime, half dollar and dollar patterns.

Examples are known as follows:

Silver J1499/P1652 with only the illustrated example ex Woodin-1914 ANS exhibit, Newcomer, Morgenthau 6/42 ?, unknown intermediates, Virginia collection, Heritage 1/17 FUN (withdrawn), Heritage 1/18 FUN, Heritage 1/19 FUN - PCGS63, known to exist. It has been repeatedly cleaned during its lifetime.

Copper J1500/P1653 with at least 8 known, 2 of which, Stacks 6/84 Bergin sale and the former Lohr, Byron Johnson, Hughes 1/79 example having been silverplated. The former example had been incorrectly slabbed as silver on more than one occasion.
