Although these are described as regular die trial pieces in the standard references, it is more likely that the off-metal 'trials' of this year were deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets.

Examples were struck as follows: To view all available images, click here.

Copper J1436/P1579 which should weigh ~39-57 grains with around 4-5 known including:

1) Merkin 9/67, Merkin 9/74, Heritage 6/87, Stacks 9/94, LegendAuctions 6/19 - PCGS65RB

2) B/M 1/90 (39 grains, specific gravity 8.86), B/M 6/90, Heritage 5/94 Bullet sale, Heritage 8/17 ANA as NGC64, Heritage 4/19 as NGC64, Simpson-Heritage 8/21 ANA - PCGS64 gilt with a lamination? on the M in AMERICA.

3) Stacks 10/71, unknown intermediates, Superior 1/05 as SEGS63, Heritage 7/05 as SEGS63 39.1 grains; Superior 8/06 as SEGS63, B/M 3/10, B/M 11/11, Heritage 1/12 FUN & B/M 8/12 ANA as NCS gilt, proof details, cleaned; Heritage 8/15 ANA (as Judd-1437 in all appearances in error) - NGC64 gilt, with a spot above Liberty's eye, another between the T&E in UNITED and a stain below the R in DOLLAR

4) Stacks 8/71 ANA, Paramount Auction 80, Simpson-Heritage 1/24 FUN (as Judd-1437 in all appearances in error) - PCGS64 gilt with obverse rim nick at 12:00 and a spot by the edge of the right ribbon on reverse.

Note: We had Heritage compare the weight of this coin to other copper and aluminum die trials being offered in that sale and was easily able to determine that this is actually a copper gilt example.

Aluminum J1437/P1580 which should weigh ~13-18 grains with only 1 or 2 believed to exist. We can only confirm the following example.

1) Stacks 11/94, Sothebys 6/96, B/M 3/03, Goldberg 5/03, Heritage 11/04 as ANACS net AU50, Heritage 6/16 - NGC environmental damage

A second is probably either Kosoff-8/66 ANA or NERCA 7/79 ANA gilt.
