Although described as regular dies trial pieces, these were deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets.
Examples were struck as follows:
Copper J1383. This is unlisted in Pollock as being indistinguishable from a bronze example without elemental analysis. An example was displayed by Judson Brenner at the 1914 ANS exhibition and went to Virgil Brand in 1919 as journal #92500:1462 to Armin Brand and was sold 9/1/37. A second was in the Newcomer inventory. An example has been graded PCGS64BN.
Aluminum J1384/P1528 with only 2 confirmed as follows:
1) Heritage 1/08, Simpson-Heritage 4/21, Heritage 8/22 ANA, Heritage 11/23 - PCGS66, illustrated above, click on the thumbnail image to enlarge
2) Lauder-Doyle Galleries 12/83 - gem proof with an obverse scratch at the point of Liberty's bust
One of these is ex Brenner-1914 ANS exhibition, Brand in 1919 (journal #92500:1463) and the other is ex Woodin, Newcomer.
