Although described as a regular dies trial piece in the literature, it is more likely that this was deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets.
Examples were struck as follows:
Copper J1041. This is unlisted in Pollock. If any do exist, they are probably masquerading as a regular issue proof.
Aluminum J1042/P1176 with only 2 confirmed:
1) Heritage 6/02 as PCGS64, now PCGS66 with lint mark from E in CENT, illustrated above, click on the thumbnail image to enlarge
2) Lauder-Doyle Galleries 12/83 - gem proof
One of these is ex Brenner-1914 ANS, Brand and the other is ex Woodin-Newcomer.
Nickel J1042A/P1177 which is believed to be unique and is ex NN 6/67, Stacks 6/86 on a heavy 68.25 grain planchet. The piece is worn, graded fine, and weakly struck. The possibility exists that this may be some sort of mint error. For more on these, click here.
