Although described as a regular dies trial piece struck in copper by Judd, this is actually a restrike deliberately struck for sale to collectors in the 1870s.
The obverse is the regular with drapery die of 1839 combined with the reverse used on the regular issue (not pattern) J100A/P111 and later on pattern restrike J95-J96/P103-P104. Both dies show rusting.
Stewart Witham noted 152 reeds on these, which according to a reed count listing from Bill Bugert of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club, means they were likely struck some time between 1861 & 1871. We believe the actual date is closer to the latter date.
Only two examples are known as follows:
1) Farouk, Mayflower 5/59, Cox, 66 ANA, Coronet Coin, Witham, Auction 81, Queller-Heritage 1/09, Simpson-Heritage 2/21 - PCGS66RB
2) Mitchelson, Connecticut State Library - gem proof
One of these is lot 957 in Elder's 22nd sale of 12/16/1908. It is unclear if this is a later occurrence of the 1890 Parmelee coin.
