In this year, the Mint began testing of a uniformly designed minor set containing the one cent, 3 cent and 5 cent design struck in nickel. Two such design sets were prepared. To view the other set, click here. We illustrate these, courtesy of Stacks using the double set of 1868 minor patterns struck in nickel presented by Henry Linderman to Emily Trotter. It is the only presentation set of these coins known and was originally offered by Stacks as lot 1061 of their October 1992 Floyd Starr sale and later resold in their October 2000 and June 2006 sales. It contains the cent J608/P673, 3 cent J618/P687 and 5 cent J633/P704-5. Its earliest sales occurrence appears to be Mason & Co's 9/1869 Thorn sale. Sets were sold to collectors for $9 per Ed Cogan's 1/1871 sale lot 303. Some sets may have had mixed coinage from among the 6-7 pieces available. Supposedly 100 sets were made in nickel whereas only about a half dozen were struck in copper. Die varieties exist for the cent and 5 cent. This set was repeated in 1869. To view that set, click here.
