Great Pattern Collections and Sales from 1851 to 1899
by Saul Teichman
Entered May 19, 2001

The following listing represents the important pattern collections sold in the 1800s. Obviously, the more important pattern sales occur toward the end of the century as the more popular patterns and restrikes started to hit the market after about 1875. The number of lots listed in most cases is an estimate as often there were other pieces grouped with the patterns in these sales.

The listing was sourced from the Saul Teichman numismatic library. If you believe that an important sale is missing, please let me know at Saul.Teichman@ey.com.

In addition to the auction catalogs listed below, there are several fixed price lists by Charles Steigerwalt which contain many patterns. For additional information on which lists to look at, we recommend the book "United States Numismatic Literature" Volume I by John W. Adams.
