This is an 1805 obverse die trial struck in tin as used on J36/P6110. It is believed to have been struck outside the mint by Joseph J. Mickley or Montroville Dickeson from dies sold by the mint as scrap.
The piece is believed to be unique and is ex Parsons (H. Chapman 1914) lot 346, Brand (journal id #75392), Judd, Kosoff-Bowers and Merena 11/85.
The Parsons sale listed as lot 345 an example in brass so there may be another floating around. We have numbered it as JA1805-2/P6136.
Photo is a scan from the Bowers and Merena Kosoff sale.
