This is an experimental piece struck in argentan - a German silver alloy - using regular 1854 half dime dies. On this variety, the date is high. These were struck on very thick planchets with rounded plain edge. About a half dozen are believed to exist. The illustrated example is the one that appeared in the August 1991 joint sale by RARCOA and David Akers.
